Be aware of the limited parking and heed local regulations to avoid fines.

Will I Have Cell Service on the Road To Hana?

Yes & No….For the first few miles you will most likely have a weak and spotty signal. As you drive deeper be prepared to loose all service. We suggest having music downloaded ahead of time to play as there is only one radio station that works out there and it can be spotty. If you are doing a self-guided tour be sure to download it before you begin your journey. Some stops on the way might offer wifi but I wouldn’t count on it. Be prepared to be unreachable for at least a few hours!

Should You Drive Yourself or Take a Tour?

Choosing the Best Experience for You:

While driving yourself offers flexibility, the Road to Hana can be crowded and parking at popular sites can be challenging. Consider a guided tour for a more relaxed experience where you can focus on the scenery and learn from local guides, enhancing your journey with stories and history you might otherwise miss. They will typically pick you up from your hotel, feed you lunch & you can even take a nap on the drive back!

Many people choose to self-drive & this is how we have always done the road to hana. The last two times we drove the Road To Hana we downloaded an Audio Guide and played it on our drive. It told us about recommended stops as they came up and told us about the history of the areas we were driving through. It was very informative and took alot of questions of where should we stop? where are we? out of the equation.

What is the Weather Like on the Road to Hana?

The weather on the Road to Hana can be quite variable and is known for quick changes due to its tropical rainforest climate. Expect frequent rain showers which help maintain the lush scenery, although they can be brief. Always be prepared with rain gear and check the weather forecast before your trip to avoid any surprises. The rain contributes to the numerous waterfalls and stunning greenery along the route, enhancing the beauty of your drive. Drive cautiously, as the road can become slippery when wet, and ensure you’re prepared for varying conditions throughout your journey.

Do I Need to Drive the Whole Road to Hana?

No, you don’t need to drive the entire Road to Hana to experience its beauty. Many travelers choose to turn around at key points depending on their time constraints and interests. For a shorter trip, you might consider turning back after visiting, Ke‘anae Peninsula, or The Garden Of Eden. This allows you to enjoy many of the route’s highlights without committing to the full drive.
